Tempur is a well-known mattress company that developed a great reputation over the years.

Certified by the International Space foundation, they are one of the original memory foam mattress producers. Having continually improved their range of products they now have an impressive range of mattresses and sleep accessories.

Tempur is well regarded within the mattress industry. They have a strong focus on developing their products and continually improving their products with a team in place to do just that. It can be said that they are not a typical online mattress company. While they do sell directly from their website their mattresses are also available in several different shops.

In terms of the Tempur Cloud Mattress, it is a Soft-Medium foam mattress, featuring memory foam it gives a focus on comfort while also providing support to the sleeper. Something that Tempur does a little bit different is to offer three different types of mattress. These are the Lux, Elite and Supreme. Each has a slightly different thickness which translates to each of their layers. The same materials are used in all three though.

The Tempur Cloud mattress is Tempur’s softest mattress option. We have taken a closer look at the different layers of this mattress and what it is like to sleep on.

Construction and Materials

The team at Tempur was one of the first to start using memory foam in their mattresses. Over time they have improved their products to offer an impressive range. Tempur continually tests its products for durability and build quality. As a result, the finished product is extremely high quality consistently.

With the Tempur Cloud mattress, there are three different versions of the mattress, these are slightly different in their construction.

The first available option is the Cloud Supreme, its construction is as follows:

Extra Soft Material: 5cm

Support Material: 5cm

Durabase Technology: 11cm

Total Depth: 21cm

The middle option available is the Cloud Elite, the layers have this depth:

Support Material: 7cm

Durabase Technology: 11cm

Total Depth: 25cm

The premium option for this mattress is the Cloud Luxe, the depth of layers is as follows:

Extra Soft Material: 7cm

Support Material: 9cm

Durabase Technology: 6.5cm

Durabase Technology 2: 7cm

Total Depth: 30cm

As can be seen, the Luxe option is significantly thicker overall and has more foam in each layer, they are all made from the same material, however. So the layers of the different types of the mattress are the same, just different thickness. We have broken each one down to see what they bring to the mattress.

1. Quick Refresh Cover Layer

The cover of this mattress is made from a blend of 98% polyester and 2% elastane. This keeps the mattress stretchy and tight-fitting on the mattress while having a luxurious feel. The mattress is easy to keep clean. It can be removed and machine washed so you can keep the whole mattress hygienic.

2. Tempur Support Material Layer

The Tempur support material layer is a foam layer that adds to the support and pressure relief of the mattress. It works to make sure the key joints are kept in a good position. This allows the spine to be in a healthy position, preventing aches and pains from developing.

3. Tempur Extra Soft Material Layer

The Tempur extra soft material layer is another foam layer. This one is very soft compared to the others and provides the contouring, moulding effect that memory foam is famous for. It gives the mattress a nice hugging feel.

4. Durabase Technology Layer

A solid foundation base layer is very important for all mattresses. This durabase technology layer adds a large amount of support and pressure point relief to the mattress. The foundation layer also allows the benefits of the layers above to be maximised. As a result of them having a good foundation layer to sit on, their durability is increased and it will help the mattress reach its expected life span. The Luxe version of this mattress features two of these layers.

Comfort, Support and Sleep Quality

The Tempur Cloud is the softest Tempur mattress available. Rated as a Soft-Medium it comes in between a 4-5 on a 1-10 scale. As it is so soft the mattress offers a considerable sinkage and moulding effect from the first extra soft foam layer. The layers below still give the mattress a great amount of support, helping ease aches and pains.

Sleeping comfortably is extremely subjective, variables such as height, weight and sleeping position all have a massive impact on what mattress suits us best. We have broken down each sleeping position to see what it will generally be like to sleep on. The best way to try this mattress is by sleeping on it yourself during the 100-night trial.

Back sleepers need some support to keep their back and spine in a comfortable position. The mattress provides a great balance between comfort and support with a focus on comfort. This mattress will generally be a great fit for people who sleep on their backs.

Side sleepers generally need more of a sink from their mattress to sleep comfortably. This allows the spine to stay aligned and well supported. With the Tempur Cloud, the softness of the mattress allows for this. This mattress will generally be a great fit for side sleepers and allow them to get a comfortable night’s sleep.

Front sleepers need the most support out of all sleeping positions. This is needed on the shoulders and hips to keep them in a good position. If you generally sleep on your front then you may be better suited to a firmer mattress, especially if you are heavier than average. The Tempur Sensation can be a great fit if this is the case.

The edge support on this mattress is average. This is generally the case with memory foam mattresses and is not a specific negative for this mattress.

Heat retention within this mattress is not a massive problem. Though the mattress is all-foam, there is a Smart Climate System included in the mattress, this wicks away excess moisture and helps keep the mattress cool. As a result, the mattress should sleep relatively cool.

Trial and Guarantee

The Tempur Cloud mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial. This allows you to try out the mattress and get a good idea of if it suits you. This is massive compared to trying it at a showroom and only getting a few minutes to try it out.

If you decide that the mattress is not for you then returning it is a simple process to return the mattress. Simply contact Tempurs support team and they will organise a time for collection. Once the mattress has been picked up then Tempur fully refunds the mattress. This is great as some companies only allow for swapping the mattress for a different firmness level or a different mattress from them.

With orders of the Tempur Cloud mattress, you get a 10-year warranty. Companies are only required to offer this for one year so it is great to see such a long period offered. This also covers you for the expected life span of the mattress so you can have peace of mind that you are covered for a long time. It is still worth checking the small print with this to see what exactly you are covered for.

Delivery

The expected delivery periods for this mattress are currently 14-28 days. This is slightly disappointing and is slower than most other online mattress companies. It is worth waiting for quality, however.

Included in every order of a Tempur mattress is free delivery and set-up. This is a two-man delivery team who will take the mattress into the room of your choice and set it up for you. This is an excellent bonus if you would otherwise struggle to move the mattress. Tempur has had to perfect this process and it shows.

When the mattress is first delivered there may be a gassy chemical type smell that comes from the mattress. This is very typical and also completely normal from a memory foam mattress. The smell is caused by off-gassing from the foam and mattresses with more foam will have more of this smell. This will not last forever however and will start to disappear after only a few hours. It should be completely gone after a few days. Keeping your mattress in a well-ventilated room will also speed this process up.

If you need an old mattress taking away then this is available for an additional fee of £30. This can be an easy option to get rid of the mattress but may end up costing more than your local council would charge to do the same.

Customer Reviews

Tempur is only partly well regarded on Trustpilot. They still have over 40% of reviews rated as excellent and a rating of 3.7/5. This can be viewed here.

Our Verdict

If just looking at the mattress on its own then the Tempur Cloud is a very well made mattress that will give a comfortable night’s sleep. Tempur is one of the founders of the memory foam mattress industry and is very well regarded, so cannot be easily dismissed. With this reputation, you are paying a premium for the product.

In the highly competitive online mattress market, there are lots of different options that come in at a cheaper price. The purchase price of the mattress is helped by the inclusion of a Tempur mattress protector with every order. This is valued at £125. A mattress protector helps prevent moisture from being absorbed into the mattress, this can damage the materials inside and significantly decrease its lifespan. Another benefit from using a mattress protector is that it can help protect the warranty as spills and leaks on the mattress may void this.

The trial period of 100-nights and warranty give you an excellent time to try out the mattress if you have any doubts about this mattress suiting you. It gives a perfect opportunity to be able to see what it is like to sleep on as the materials settle inside.

To conclude, this mattress is very well made and does what it claims to do excellently. If you are not put off by the price then this mattress will be a great fit if you are looking for the following:

  • A mattress that is made from the highest quality available materials.
  • A mattress that sleeps very comfortably and gives a great moulding effect.
  • A mattress that is made by a well-known company with a good reputation.
