Tempur is one of the oldest memory foam mattress manufacturers within the UK. They are also the only one that is certified by the International Space Foundation. It has been over 30 years since memory foam was developed and Tempur has continually worked on their products.

As a result, they now have an extensive and impressive range of mattresses and sleeping accessories. Carrying a great reputation within the mattress industry, they continually try to improve their products and try to do things slightly differently than other online mattress companies. One of these is offering the opportunity to try the mattress in several retailers before purchase.

In terms of this mattress, the Tempur Hybrid is a medium-firm mattress, featuring a mixture of memory foam and pocket springs. It aims to get the best of both. Three different options of this mattress are available, these are the Lux, Elite and Supreme. While all using the same materials they each have slightly different construction and thickness.

The Tempur Hybrid mattress is the only hybrid memory foam mattress made by Tempur, this certainly makes it very interesting. We have taken a closer look at the mattress, breaking down the layers to see what they add and what the mattress offers as a complete package

Construction and Materials

Tempur uses the highest quality materials available in their mattresses. They have a dedicated team that continually tests and improves their products. This allows them to offer a highly reliable product that has excellent build quality.

Being one of the first mattress manufacturers of memory foam, they have developed an impressive range that offers something for everyone. While they use memory foam in all of their mattresses, this is the only one to feature micro coil pocket springs as well.

In terms of colour scheme, the Tempur hybrid has a very modern stylish cover. The top is white and textured with a bright green trim going around the sides of the mattress. The bottom half of the mattress is grey. This allows the mattress to fit into most bedrooms if left uncovered.

With the Tempur Cloud mattress, there are three different versions of the mattress, these are slightly different in their construction. The same materials are used throughout each mattress, however.

The first available option is the Hybrid Supreme, its construction is as follows:

Advanced Tempur Material: 3cm

Dynamic Support Technology: 5cm

Precision Micro Coils: 10cm

Durabase Technology: 3cm

Total: 21cm

The middle option, the Hybrid Elite has these sized layers in the mattress:

Advanced Tempur Material: 4cm

Dynamic Support Technology: 8cm

Precision Micro Coils: 10cm

Durabase Technology: 3cm

Total: 25cm

The premium and thickest, the Hybrid Luxe has these sized layers:

Advanced Tempur Material: 4cm

Dynamic Support Technology: 3cm

Precision Micro Coils: 10cm

Precision Micro Coils 2: 10cm

Durabase Technology: 3cm

Total: 30cm

As can be seen, there is quite a big difference in the layer thickness in each model. The Hybrid Elite has a much thicker Dynamic support layer while the Hybrid Luxe has a second precision micro-coil layer. These differences do result in a slightly different sleeping experience on each of the mattresses. An example of this is that the Elite model relies more on the Dynamic support layer for support. Alternatively, this layer is minimal in the Luxe so relies on the double micro-coil layer for support.

1. Quick Refresh Cover Layer

Made from a blend of 98% polyester and 2% elastane, the Quick Refresh cover is designed to be comfortable and hygienic. The elastane within the mattress allows it to have a tight fit on the mattress and can be stretched over it easily. This makes removing the cover easy. Once removed the cover is easy to keep clean as it is machine washable.

2. Advanced Tempur Material Layer

The first layer of the mattress is the Advanced Tempur material layer. This is a firmer version of the original Tempur material. It provides more support to the key joints such as the shoulders and hips, making the mattress firmer and suit the back and front sleeping positions more.

3. Dynamic Support Technology Layer

The next layer is the Dynamic Support technology layer. This is another firmer support layer which adapts to movements in the mattress and provides support where needed. It also prevents you from sinking into the mattress too far and feeling the individual springs.

4. Precision Micro Coils Layer

The fourth layer of the mattress is the precision micro coils layer, these are individually encapsulated so they work independently of each other. This provides support to the sleepers where they need it most and allows the mattress to adapt quickly to different sleeping positions. An extra feature of this is that it minimises motion transfer across the mattress, a great bonus for couples.

5. Durabase Technology Layer

The Durabase technology base layer provides a solid foundation for the other layers to sit upon. This increases the durability of the mattress and maximises the benefits of the other layers of the mattress.

Comfort, Support and Sleep Quality

Rated as a medium-firm mattress, the Tempur Hybrid lands between 6-7 on a 1-10 scale. Many manufacturers aim for this range of firmness as it will typically suit the widest range of sleepers.

The mattress is a hybrid of memory foam and pocket springs. This blends the support and springy feel from the pocket springs with the moulding, contouring effect of the memory foam. The layers of this mattress work together to provide a highly responsive feel, the mattress quickly adapts to any movements giving you the support needed. This helps prevent any aches or pains from developing throughout the night. Allowing for a well-rested night’s sleep.

What we need to sleep comfortably is highly individual. Several factors such as body weight, sleeping position and medical conditions all can affect what we require from a mattress. We have looked at what the average person will generally experience when sleeping on this mattress. As sleep needs are so subjective the best way to try this mattress is personally, during the 100-night sleep trial period.

Back sleepers are generally suited to the widest range of mattress, they need a decent level of support to keep their main joints supported but can benefit from a more comfortable mattress. As a result, this mattress should be an excellent fit for most back sleepers.

Side sleepers need some sinkage at the hips to allow for good spinal alignment and comfortable sleep. The sink from the memory foam and springs should provide this in this mattress and suit you very well. Because of this, the Tempur Hybrid should be an excellent fit for the majority of back and side sleepers.

Front sleepers need the most support to sleep comfortably, they should get it from this mattress and be able to sleep comfortably. If you are larger than average then you may benefit from a slightly firmer mattress. The Tempur Sensation could be a great fit if this is the case.

The edge support on this mattress is better than previous models. The addition of the micro-coil layer increases the support level of the mattress towards the edges. This minimises any feeling of rolling off you might experience.

Overheating on this mattress should not be a problem. The addition of the micro-coils increases airflow within the mattress due to the extra space. This helps remove excess heat as you sleep. Preventing heat retention and overheating.

Motion isolation is good in this mattress, the micro-coils do not have too much of a bounce and the memory foam does a good job of minimising the movement transfer across the mattress. As a result, this mattress is a great choice for couples.

Trial and Guarantee

With a premium mattress, you also expect a premium service. With all orders of the Tempur Hybrid mattress comes a 100-night sleep trial. This gives an excellent opportunity to try out the mattress in your bedroom, much better than just testing it for a few minutes in a showroom. It also allows you to try the mattress with your sheets and pillows to get a more realistic experience.

If you decide that you do not like the mattress during this time then returns are simple and free. Contact Tempurs support team and they will organise a date for pick up. Once collected you will be eligible for a free refund. This is one of the best trials offered within the mattress industry.

Alongside the 100-night trial, the mattress comes with a 10-year warranty. This is much bigger than what some other companies offer and is about average for online mattress companies. While it does come with terms and conditions it does give extra peace of mind that you should be covered if something goes wrong with your mattress.

Delivery

Tempur currently works off an estimated delivery time of 14-28 days after purchase. This is longer than the average online mattress company. It can be worth waiting for though, knowing you are getting a well-built mattress that comes with excellent support. The delivery of the mattress is free though so this is a bonus.

The mattress will be delivered by a 2-man delivery team. They also offer free set-up, so will take the mattress to the room of your choice and set the mattress up ready for use. The mattress does not come rolled up so will be ready to use immediately. This delivery service is excellent and gives the service a very professional feel. It is especially useful if you would have otherwise struggled to move the mattress onto your base.

If you need an old mattress taking away then this can be added onto the order for an additional £30 when purchasing the mattress.

Some reviewers have noted a strong gassy, chemical smell when the packaging is first removed from the mattress. This is completely normal with memory foam mattresses and will not last. Try to leave the mattress in the room with good ventilation. This will speed up the process and should not last much longer than a few days.

Customer Reviews

Tempur is only partly well regarded on Trustpilot. They still have over 40% of reviews rated as excellent and a rating of 3.7/5. This can be viewed here.

Our Verdict

The online mattress business is highly competitive. With many different options, it can be difficult to choose a mattress that seems right for you. This mattress is rated very highly among customers, the only issue reported seems to be the high price point. The Tempur Hybrid mattress is a top-end premium hybrid mattress, the price is helped by the inclusion of Tempur’s Mattress Protector, this is valued at £125. A mattress protector is essential to keep your warranty intact, any spills or leaks may damage the mattress fillings and will void the warranty. It also prevents excess moisture from being absorbed by the mattress, this can significantly decrease the durability of the materials inside the mattress.

The 100-night trial and 10-year warranty sets a good standard for the online mattress industry. It gives plenty of time to decide if the mattress suits you and peace of mind after purchase.

To sleep on, the Tempur Hybrid mattress offers a medium-firm sleeping surface that will suit the majority of sleepers. The mattress offers a balance of comfort and support by mixing pocket spring micro coils with memory foam.

To conclude the Tempur Hybrid mattress will be a great fit for a large number of people, we believe it is an excellent choice if you are looking for the following:

  • A well-regarded mattress that has excellent reviews.
  • A long-standing company that is well respected for producing good quality mattresses.
  • A hybrid mattress that maximises the benefits of memory foam and pocket springs.
