Brook and Wilde are a British luxury brand. While relatively new, only being founded in 2018, it is good to see they are bringing something different to the table in terms of the bed in a box market. The two mattress options are top of the range in terms of price but with the price comes a very high-quality product.
Everything is manufactured within the UK and their mattresses come with an option of being delivered in soft, medium or firm. This makes the mattress suit a wider range of people and makes it easier to find the one that fits your needs perfectly. Their mattresses are a hybrid of memory foam and pocket springs with a high amount of layers compared to the average mattress in this market.
The Brook and Wilde Lux mattress are the cheaper of the two mattresses by Brook and Wilde but that does not mean corners have been cut in any way. The mattress is delivered rolled and vacuum packed in a small box, making it easier to move into the room you need it in.
We have taken a deeper dive on this product to see what the mattress offers and more importantly if it is worth the price.

Construction and Materials
While not quite as extensive as the Elites 8 layers. This mattress still holds its own with a hefty 6 layers. The Brook and Wilde Lux mattress is the same size at 28cm. Featuring a total of 3500 pocket springs which are separated into two different layers. This provides an excellent balance between the comfort of memory foam and support from the pocket springs. This size and complexity of construction are impressive from a mattress that is delivered rolled up and vacuum packed.
We have broken down each of the 6 layers to identify what they add to the mattress:
1. Breathable Cover Layer
The Brook and Wilde Lux mattress cover are designed to deliver a balance of comfort, durability and breathability. In general, the cover has a good feel to it, the material is of high quality and has four handles on the sides to allow for easy moving or rotating when needed. The good news for sufferers of allergies is that it is hypoallergenic. So it is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.
The design of the cover is two-tone with the top half being white with a pattern on it. The top and bottom are separated by a distinctive orange line and the bottom half is dark blue. While simple, it gives the mattress a striking finish and gives it a premium feel.
A downside of this cover is that it is not machine washable, this makes cleaning it effectively very difficult and you will have to resort to spot clean it if needed. This is a bit of a letdown as we would expect a premium cover to be machine washable, especially with the Brook and Wilde Elite mattress cover also being machine washable.
2. Cooling Memory Foam Layer
This first memory foam layer provides a soft top of the mattress, it will mould around your body and add to the comfort of the mattress. This particular memory foam has cooling properties to help avoid the common memory foam problem of overheating. It is also designed to minimise motion transfer across the mattress so if you share the mattress you will not be disturbed by their movement through the night.
3. 2000 Mini Pocket Springs Layer
Below the memory foam layer is the first pocket spring layer, these 2000 mini pocket springs work independently of each other and with the body to provide support and pressure point relief where it is most needed. The smaller springs are designed to quickly adapt as you move on the mattress, making getting comfortable in the mattress much easier.
While mini springs that are often found in hybrid mattresses do add to the support and bounce of the mattress, they are often lacking the full support found in traditional pocket spring mattresses. The fact that this mattress has both is an outstanding feature that adds to the mattress.
4. Wave Technology Memory Foam Layer
This fourth layer is another layer of memory foam. This is much denser than the first memory foam layer and is designed to help maintain spinal alignment. The memory foam is shaped similar to a wave, this results in more support to the key pressure point areas, in particular the hips and shoulders. This adds to the pressure point relief in the mattress and helps you sleep in a position that is healthy, supportive and comfortable.
5. 1000 Full Sized Pocket Spring Layer
The second pocket spring layer is the main support layer. This features 1000 full-sized pocket springs (13cm). Each spring works independently to provide support where you need it, it also helps minimise motion transfer across the mattress. This layer adds a great bounce and push back right across the mattress. As a result, edge support on this mattress is very good. When moving sleeping positions on this mattress you can feel the benefits of the springs and they prevent you from sinking into the foam too much.
6. Support Foam Base Layer
The bottom layer of the Brook and Wilde Lux mattress is the support layer. Made from high-density polyurethane. It provides support to the above layers, mainly the full-sized pocket spring layer. The density of the foam provides a solid layer which keeps the mattress together and allows you to get the most out of each layer.
Comfort, Support and Sleep Quality
One of the main variable features of the Brook and Wilde Lux mattress is the three different firmness options. While very similar in construction, the soft, medium and firm options all offer different sleeping experiences. This is a great move as the comfort and support that we require from our mattress changes massively from person to person. While many mattress manufacturers opt for a medium-firm mattress the option of 3 different choices will result in this mattress suiting a much wider variety of sleepers.
The sleeping position also plays a very large part in which firmness will suit you the best. As a general rule if you sleep on your side then you are usually suited to the soft or medium mattress. Back and stomach sleepers will need a firmer option as they require more support to the key pressure areas.
You may find that the support you need is more than adequate in one of the softer versions. This is because the wave memory foam layer has specifically been designed to work with the top layer of memory foam and provide extra support in the four zones you are likely to need it the most. These are the neck, shoulders, hips and legs.
Concerning individual firmness levels, the soft is said to be ‘a luxurious marshmallow’ by Brook and Wilde themselves. The medium mattress providing ‘a perfect balance of support and sink’. Finally, the firm is ‘less springy but more supportive.
This gives a good general feel of the design goals of these mattresses.
If you sleep on your back you will feel the contouring effect of the memory foam layer straight away. You will easily be able to keep a healthy spine alignment with the medium or firm. These will also be extremely comfortable while still providing more than enough support to the hips and shoulders.
Sleeping on the side will often need a softer mattress due to needing to sink further into the mattress to get into a comfortable position that allows you to have good posture. The soft or medium mattress will allow for this. The firm may not allow you to sink in as far as is sometimes needed.
On your front/stomach, the pushback from the spring layers and wave layer gives the support needed to be well-positioned and comfortable. The firm mattress is the ideal mattress for this as the softer options may sink too much causing an unhealthy curvature of the spine leading to waking up with potential aches and pains over time. The trial period on this mattress gives you the ideal opportunity to test which one suits you best as the one you need will also be dependent on body weight.
Changing your sleeping position on the Brook and Wilde Lux is very easy. As a result of the two pocket spring layers, the bounce/pushback of this mattress is great. It makes sure that you do not sink too far into the memory foam and still keep you comfortable. These traits are more similar to a traditional pocket spring mattress rather than an all-foam or hybrid mattress.
The only downside to the two spring layers is the increase in motion transfer compared to an all-foam mattress. While it does exist, the top layer of memory foam is designed to minimise this and it still does a good job. It is not too much that you will be woken up by your partner’s movements through the night though. The tradeoff is more than worth it with the extra support that is received from the pocket springs.
Trial and Guarantee
As is pretty standard within the bed in a box market, the Brook and Wilde Lux come with a 100-night trial period. Slightly different to other companies however is that Brook and Wilde offer the option to be able to exchange your mattress for one with a different firmness free of charge. This makes it much easier to order the mattress without having to worry about getting the perfect one the first time around. Alternatively, if you decide that this mattress is not the one for you then you can get a full refund instead. Brook and Wilde have a dedicated website page and support team for returns. This makes the process quick and stress-free.
Every mattress that is returned to Brook and Wilde is donated to the British Heart Foundation which is a nice added extra.
The Lux mattress also comes with a 10-year guarantee, this covers general things such as manufacturing faults. It is always best to double-check this to see everything that is covered. It is a great bonus though and shows confidence in the product to offer it in the first place. The combination of the trial and guarantee add a little extra peace of mind and confidence in the ordering process which is always a good added extra.
Delivery
It is difficult to find fault with Brook and Wilde’s delivery service. They offer a free premium delivery service which includes setup of the mattress. Old mattress recycling is also available for an additional fee.
The premium delivery service offered by Brook and Wilde features a two-man delivery team who will take the mattress to the room of your choice. A great added extra for those who may need a bit of extra help in moving it and putting it into place.
As the Brook and Wilde Lux is a bed in a box mattress, the vacuum-packed mattress is delivered easier and also quicker than other similar mattresses. The size of the box it is delivered in is 100c2m x 50cm x 50cm. Brook and Wilde estimate that it will take 3 days from ordering for your mattress to be delivered, this ranks as one of the top delivery times within the UK bed in a box market.
Customer Reviews
Despite taking a smaller section of the mattress market in the UK, Brook and Wilde are well regarded. They have over 1000 reviews on Trustpilot and over 80% are rated as excellent. This gives them an average rating of 4.6/5. This can be viewed here.

Our Verdict
The Brook and Wilde Lux mattress is a very strong offering to the bed in a box market. The unique six-layer design featuring two separate layers of pocket springs sets it apart from the normal bed in a box. That added with having the option to select from three different firmness levels allows you to find the version of this mattress that suits you perfectly.
This mattress provides a great balance between comfort and support allowing for a restful night’s sleep. The build quality is high and Brook and Wilde have used top quality materials when designing and constructing it. While the price is top of the range we feel it matches the price tag. If combined with a discount code then it can be excellent value for what you are getting.
The support and delivery from Brook and Wilde are top of the line. Premium two-man delivery including setting up as standard is always appreciated and taking your old mattress away can save you an unnecessary headache. The trial period is almost expected now within this market but is useful to test the mattress and exchange it to a different level of firmness, for free, if needed. The guarantee shows confidence in the product and with the high build quality, we have little doubt that it will last throughout this.
In terms of downsides, we have found several small things that this mattress does not have that would be a great addition for a premium bed in a box mattress. The ability to machine wash the cover would be a great added extra alongside the mattress being available to order in a wider range of sizes, such as EU sizes.
To wrap up, the Brook and Wilde Lux mattress is a great choice for anyone who is looking for:
- An exchangeable mattress offered in 3 different firmness levels.
- A premium hybrid mattress made of top quality materials.
- Excellent customer support and delivery experience
