Construction and Materials

The Snuggledown Duck Feather & Down pillow is a standard sized UK pillow. So any pillowcase will comfortably fit around it. Snuggledown pride themselves in the quality and finish of their products. This pillow features a 230 thread count cotton cover, inside of this, the pillow contains a blend of 85% duck feather and 15% duck down. It is a traditionally designed and manufactured pillow that takes advantage of good quality materials and a high-quality finish instead of overly complicated manufacturing methods.

Following EU legislation introduced in 2001, this pillow contains labels that include the origin, colour, ratio and grade of the feather and down in the pillow. This increases the traceability and ethical standards in the manufacturing process. Snuggledown does a great job informing customers following the EN 12934 standard.

The quality of the materials used in a feather and down pillow is often much higher than cheaper polyester synthetic-filled pillows. Because of this, their expected lifespan is much longer, so you will not have to replace them as often.

A bonus of this pillow is that it is fully machine and tumble drier friendly, making it easy to keep clean and hygienic. We have taken a closer look now at what each layer of the pillow adds to the final product.

Layers

1. 100% Cotton Cover Layer

The Snuggledown Duck Feather and Down pillow have a traditional 100% cotton cover, featuring a 230-thread count it has an ultra-soft feel while also being very breathable. The cover is not removable but does not need to be with the full pillow being machine washable.

2. Feather and Down Filling Layer

The filling of this pillow is the most interesting part of it. Featuring a blend of 85% duck feather and 15% duck down. Having mainly feathers in the pillow over down gives the pillow a medium firmness instead of the soft firmness found in mainly down pillows. A medium level of firmness makes it an excellent choice for back or stomach sleepers. This combination of fillings also makes the pillow very breathable, great for keeping cool as you sleep.

Comfort, Support and Sleep Quality

The Snuggledown Duck Feather & Down pillow is rated as a medium firmness pillow. On a 1-10 scale it would be rated at around a 4-5. Designed to provide a balance between comfort and support, this pillow provides a comfortable sink while supporting the head and neck. This is crucial for maintaining good spinal posture, which reduces the chance of aches and pains developing.

The down and feather fillings contour around the neck and head, providing a supportive shape but not putting your head in an unnatural position. To keep getting the most out of the pillow it is recommended to plump up the pillow now and then. Sleeping position will have a massive effect on how this pillow feels. Due to the firmness, it is likely to suit back and stomach sleepers the best. We have broken down why in the next section.

Back Sleepers generally, require an average amount of support to sleep comfortably. This pillow should suit this sleeping position the best as it provides a good level of support to keep the neck and head in healthy alignment. The loft is also not too high so it will not cause excess strain on the neck.

Side Sleepers often need a good level of loft and a firmer feel to support the gap between the neck and the shoulder. Some people may find that this pillow does not offer enough support for this. This sleeping position is probably the least suited to this sleeping position but using two can result in a comfortable night’s sleep.

Stomach Sleepers require the least amount of support and loft for their pillow. The softness and sink that this pillow provides should suit this well. The pillow is not too firm to cause excess strain on the neck. Just one of these pillows should make sleeping on your front extremely comfortable and well supported.

If you have had problems with overheating and sweating as you sleep then this pillow may be an excellent fit for you. Feather and down pillows are very breathable, allowing heat and moisture to easily escape. This, combined with the breathable cotton cover keeps you cool on a warm night. The down filling of the pillow is also naturally insulating. This keeps the pillow warm on cold nights, making sure that there are no cold spots across the pillow. Great if you frequently change position as you sleep.

Bear in mind that personal preference will have a big impact on what you sleep best with. The best way to find out what suits you best is to try it in your home sleeping environment.

Our Verdict

To conclude, the traditional feather and down fillings combined with modern manufacturing techniques make this pillow a great choice at an affordable price. Snuggledown has created a comfortable pillow that will suit a wide range of people.

It is a medium firmness pillow that will hold its shape well, even if it does need plumping up now and then. Most sleeping positions will be well suited to the balance of comfort and support it provides.

It is slightly more expensive than a polyester filled pillow, the quality of the product more than makes up for it, however. The high quality will also mean that it will have to be replaced much less frequently in comparison to cheaper pillows.

One drawback of this pillow is that some reviews have noted a smell coming from the pillow when first received. If this is the case with yours then try to air the pillow as much as possible before first use to allow this to dissipate.

The Snuggledown Duck Feather and Down pillow is good quality, solid duck feather and down pillow. It will be a great fit if you are looking for the following:

  • A well, priced feather and down pillow.
  • A feather and down pillow that is responsibly sourced.
  • A non-allergenic pillow.
  • A pillow that is easily cleaned in the washing machine.
