Construction and Materials
The luxury British brand Brook and Wilde have gone all out with this mattress. The Brook and Wilde Elite mattress is a 28cm hybrid mattress, combining memory foam and springs, this mattress is filled with top quality materials. A total of 8 layers including the cover gives this mattress a great combination of support and comfort. Each layer works with the others to allow the mattress to mould to your body while eliminating motion transfer, ensuring you are not disturbed by your partner during the night. Featuring a lot more springs than the average roll-up mattress it will provide a little bit more bounce/pushback than what you may expect. The mattress is pushing what is thought to be possible while still being delivered rolled in a vacuum-packed bag.
We have broken down each of the 8 layers to identify what they add to the mattress:
1. Removable, Washable Top Cover Layer
Make from an extremely breathable four-way stretch material. The Brook and Wilde Elite cover give this mattress the stylish look it deserves. The top part of the cover is white with a teal line separating the bottom, dark blue colour. The material quality is very high and will help you stay cool throughout the night. The top cover is also hypoallergenic, making this a great choice if you suffer from allergies. The stretchy material and zips on the cover make taking it off and on a simple process while maintaining a tight fit. Once removed the cover can be washed at 30 degrees.
A simple but appreciated addition is the four handles on the side, allowing you to easily move or rotate the mattress as required.
2. Memory Foam Protector Layer
Just below the top cover is a memory foam protector. This is designed to minimise the friction between the first memory foam layer and the top cover and allows the top cover to move freely. This maximises the benefits of each of the layers and allows you to get the most out the thermo-regulating memory foam.
3. Thermo-Regulating Top Layer
This layer is an interesting mix of natural raw materials. Featuring soybean oil and a natural balm. This is designed to allow you to get better, more restful sleep. One of the goals, when they designed this layer, was to increase moisture evaporation and breathability, allowing you to stay comfortable during the night. This has resulted in an open-cell structure, this improves the above by putting micro air pockets within the foam. This solves the problem that traditional foam mattresses have with sleeping too warm and improves sleep quality.
4. 2500 Mini Pocket Spring Layer
On this mattress, the spring layers are separated into two different layers. This is the first. It contains a total of 2500 mini pocket springs. These move independently of each other and with your body to provide the support you need to sleep comfortably. This results in the mattress having great responsiveness and eases pressure points by providing support where needed. These also add an extra bounce which is often missed in all-foam mattresses.
5. Wave Foam Layer
This layer is made from a dense support foam. It is designed to provide support in four different zones. The neck, shoulder, hip and legs. This makes sure you are getting the support where you need it most. Allowing for the maintenance of good spinal alignment and pressure distribution to key pressure points.
6. 1000 Full Sized Pocket Spring Layer
This is the main support layer of the mattress. Containing another 1000 pocket springs, this time full-length 135mm ones. These provide a great pushback and bounce, often missed in hybrid mattresses. The individual springs work with your body to provide support where needed and as a result will support the vast majority of body types.
7. Base Support Foam Layer
The bottom layer of the mattress is a dense support foam, this allows the mattress to maintain its structure. This one is thinner than is usually found but that is due to the extra layer of pocket springs which provide support instead.
8. Non-Slip Base Layer
Under the bottom layer is the bottom section of the cover. This is made from a non-slip base material. This makes sure your mattress does not slide and allows it to be placed on a wide variety of bases and frames without any problems.
Comfort, Support and Sleep Quality
The Brook and Wilde Elite come with a choice of three firmness levels, soft, medium and firm. While many different mattress companies only offer one choice (usually a medium-firm option) the reality is that how we get comfortable to sleep is different for everyone. Variables include height, weight and sleeping position. The option gives you the chance to find the option that suits you best. Brook and Wilde also allow you to change your mattress for a different firmness within the 100-night trial. This makes it much easier if you are torn between buying two different mattresses.
The medium option provides a great middle-ground between comfort and support while soft being described by Brook and Wilde as ‘a luxurious marshmallow’. The firm, on the other hand, will be ideal for those looking for more support, pressure point relief and orthopaedic type qualities from a mattress.
All three different levels of firmness benefit from the top layer of memory foam, you will quickly sink into this layer making the mattress extremely comfortable. The pushback from the springs prevents you from sinking to an uncomfortable level which would cause back pain, however.
The Elite mattress is very large and thick at 28cm. This makes it much easier to get in and out of the mattress.
If you sleep on your back then the mattress provides more than enough support and has a nice bounce that prevents you from feeling as though you are sinking too far into the foam of the mattress. Changing sleeping positions is also easy because of the pushback from the springs, the micro springs adjusting to your body weight is very noticeable and you can feel the mattress adjusting, providing support where you need it most.
In comparison to an all-foam mattress, there is a noticeable difference in the amount you sink in, with the Brook and Wilde Elite having a great bounce.
If you commonly sleep on your side then it is important to be able to maintain a good spinal position while still sleeping comfortably. This Wave technology within the mattress allows your shoulders and hips to be adequately supported, allowing you to maintain this.
When sleeping on the front, this mattress provides a good amount of support to the hips and shoulders allowing the maintenance of good spinal posture. If you mainly sleep on your stomach then a firmer option is probably your best choice, this is because of the extra support needed to sleep comfortably in this position.
Despite the two spring layers in the mattress, there is not much motion transfer across the mattress. As a result, it is a great choice if you share your bed. You should not be disturbed by your partner’s movements during the night. As would be expected from a premium mattress such as this one, edge support is great. Allowing you to make use of the entire mattress and not feel as though you are going to fall off when you are near the edge.
With its lots of layers, it would be expected that breathability would be difficult to get right. The Elite mattress is very breathable, however. Its pocket spring layers and open-cell technology allow lots of airflow throughout the mattress. Even with a memory foam layer it does not suffer from the overheating problem found in traditional memory foam mattresses and will leave you feeling cool and comfortable as you sleep.
Trial and Guarantee
As is mostly standard within the bed-in-a-box industry, the Brook and Wilde Elite mattress comes with a 100-night trial. This is plenty of time to decide if the mattress is right for you. If you decide it is not quite right then you can get a full refund within this period. A bonus feature offered by Brook and Wilde is that they offer a mattress firmness exchange in which you can swap your existing mattress for one of the different firmness levels. If you are torn between two different firmness options then this can be an amazing extra. The exchange/return process is a simple one with Brook and Wilde having a dedicated page on their website that will quickly point you in the right direction and give you all the information you need. A positive side note is that each of the swapped mattresses is donated to the British Heart Foundation.
Also standard within the bed-in-a-box industry is the 10-year guarantee provided with this mattress. While standard, it does show confidence in their product and extended support to the customer should any issues arise.
Delivery
As advertised the Brook and Wilde Elite comes rolled and vacuum packed into a small box, making it handy to get upstairs and into tight-fitting spaces. Free premium delivery is included with every order of this mattress. This includes taking it to a room of your choice and the setup. Everything will be ready for you to use the mattress pretty much straight away.
While the mattress is very large at 28cm, it does reach this size quickly after removing the packaging with some reviewers stating it was ready to use within 3 hours.

Our Verdict
Featuring a 6-layer design (8 including the cover), the Brook and Wilde Elite mattress is practically unmatched in terms of its design, a hybrid with 3500 springs is almost unheard of. This also comes with a high price tag, as expected, however. This mattress is still certainly a great choice of mattress.
Without even including the sleeping experience of this mattress, there are a great number of benefits. Offering free 2-man delivery (recycling of your old mattress is available for an additional fee) the Brook and Wilde team lifts itself above the average mattress company. Another bonus of buying this mattress is that Brook and Wilde plant a tree for every mattress sold. It improves the entire experience of ordering. While the 100-night trial is becoming more and more common for mattresses like this. The ability to swap your mattress to a different firmness during this (free of charge) gives a lot more confidence in ordering before trying the mattress.
Almost everywhere we have looked this mattress is very well regarded. Very few negative reviews can be found and this speaks very highly of not just the mattress, but the customer service and delivery experience as well.
The mattress is designed very well and added little bonuses such as well designed handles add to the finished product. The finish is very attractive and fits the materials within the mattress.
Inside the mattress, the many different layers provide a fantastic balance of comfort and support. The mattresses availability at 3 different levels of firmness means there is one to suit sleepers of all sizes, shapes and sleeping styles. All of these factors combined are sure to make the Brook and Wilde Elite an excellent choice for the majority
To wrap up, we believe the Brook and Wilde Elite Mattress is a great option for anyone who is looking for:
- A great customer service experience and premium delivery.
- A hybrid mattress that can be changed if the initial firmness does not suit you.
- A mattress which is premium all the way, from materials to design.
While it will not suit all budgets, the premium price delivers a premium product.
