Established in 2016, the Yorkshire based company Otty has become a popular provider of affordable mattresses. All delivered in a vacuum-packaged box to allow you to move it around much easier than traditional mattresses.

The Otty Essential Hybrid mattress is a slightly cheaper alternative to the Otty Original Hybrid. This mattress is slightly thinner at 20cm of depth compared to the 25cm of the Original Hybrid. This is due to slightly Looking at the specifications of the mattresses, both of them use the same materials during construction with the big differences being that the Otty Essential Hybrid has 1000 pocket springs compared to 2000 in the Original. Both have the same trial policy and guarantee. We have taken a look at whether the mattress still holds up to Ottys high standards of the Original and whether there is much between the mattresses with a £70-80 average price difference.

Construction and Materials

A big feature of the Otty Essential mattress is their full-sized pocket springs within the mattress, of which there are 1000. These 14cm springs are much larger than the 2cm micro springs often found within hybrid mattresses. This provides a lot more support within the mattress. Otty is also Certipur and Europur certified. These are independent testing boards which test foam within the mattress for properties which may make the sleeper at risk. We have broken down each layer of the mattress for its effects and use within the mattress to see how it performs compared to other similar mattresses.

First up is the cover of the Otty Essential Hybrid mattress. This is a thick knit cover which is made from a mix of 97% polyester and 3% spandex, this gives a soft comfortable feel to the mattress while still being easily stretchable and easy to put back on if you remove it for washing. The cover is easily washable with a zip on the side so it is easily removed from the mattress. It is machine washable at 40 degrees celsius. A key feature of this cover is that it is hypoallergenic, making it extremely unlikely that it will cause any kind of allergic reaction while laying on it. The cover is constructed with larger than average pores on the top of it. This allows increased airflow into the mattress, increasing breathability.

1. Cool Blue Gel Infused Memory Foam Layer

Directly below the cover, the first layer of the mattress features a 2cm layer of Ottys gel-infused cooling memory foam. This is the same as the Original mattress and features gel beads added into the memory foam. This helps reduce heat retention from the foam, keeping you from overheating while sleeping.

2. HD Reflex Foam Layer

Below this is a firmer transitional high-density reflex foam. While being softer than the memory foam layer above it is firmer than the pocket springs below. This allows you to still sink into the mattress and get the benefits from each layer. This layer increases the support of the mattress while providing a great balance of comfort as well.

3. Pocket Spring Layer

The pocket spring layer is next. The Otty Essential Hybrid mattress has 1000 pocket springs in each king size mattress. Spring counts are scaled from this depending on the size of the mattress you order. The springs add a great amount of support to the mattress and will help you get the support you need on key joints such as your hips and shoulders. These springs help to give the mattress its medium-firm feel and along with the layers of foam help minimise motion transfer across the mattress.

The pocket springs within the Otty Essential give it a great bounce. Increased airflow is a benefit of having this many springs as well due to the space created around them. Despite many pocket spring mattresses creating an effect of feeling as though you are going to roll off the mattress, the addition of a side layer helps prevent this.

4. Air-flow Side Support Layer

At the sides of this layer is a foam side layer. This provides extra support to the mattress. It also increases edge support of the mattress, allowing you to sleep right to the edges, increasing the total sleepable surface of the mattress. These side layers are designed jointed, increasing airflow within the mattress. Another feature to help prevent waking up too hot and sweating.

5. High-Density Foam Base Layer

Finally, this mattress has a small 2cm layer of high-density foam at the bottom. This provides a foundation on which the other layers sit and prevents the springs from having direct contact with whatever base you place it on. This increases the lifespan of the mattress. This layer is quite a bit smaller than what you would normally find in similar mattresses of this type. With this being an essential model though we would expect to find these differences.

Comfort, Support and Sleep Quality

The Otty Essential Hybrid mattress is slightly softer than the Otty Original Hybrid. This lands it with a rating of 6/10. This still puts it (just) at a medium-firm rating. This slightly softer rating is due to the smaller layers within the mattress. The large springs still being present do allow this mattress to have similar levels of support compared to the Otty Original allowing you to maintain good spine position, avoiding waking with aches and pains. Due to the similar construction to the Otty Original, this mattress also has great comfort levels. One of the highlights of this mattress compared to its market rivals is the breathability. No problems should be had with overheating while sleeping on this mattress.

In terms of sleeping position, Otty claims that this mattress will suit all types of sleepers. We have also found this to be generally true. When front sleeping, the mattress adjusts to the body generally quite well and provides enough support to stop your hips and shoulders from sinking into the mattress disproportionately. The mattress does its job quite well, providing pressure point relief where needed.

When back sleeping the mattress conforms to your body nicely while not sinking in too much to be uncomfortable. The support found in this position is great, mainly coming from the full-sized pocket springs. The pressure point relief is probably average and did not stand out as a strong point but will leave you feeling well-rested and is good enough to prevent aches and pains. This amount of pressure relief is always expected with a thinner mattress.

The sleeping position where this mattress shines is the side. The edge support allows you to get in just the right position for you. The support of the mattress keeps your spine in a neutral alignment and is generally very comfortable with the body slightly sinking into the mattress but not too much.

If you are a combination sleeper, frequently moving positions during the night then this mattress should suit you well. The memory foam quickly adjusts to your body while the pocket springs stop you from sinking into the mattress and leave you feeling stuck in one position.

The Essentials combination of springs and foam bring its motion transfer into question. Generally, it does a fantastic job of reducing motion transfer to a minimum so you will not feel your partner turning during the night. If you are heavier though then the bounce of the springs may be felt slightly if your partner frequently moves positions as they sleep.

If you sleep towards the edge of the mattress then this will suit you. The edge support of the Otty Essential Hybrid is great and the additional side support pays off. This mattress does provide support edge to edge.

Our Verdict

The Otty Essential Hybrid mattress is a great offering for anyone looking for a hybrid mattress at an affordable price. This medium mattress is comfortable and breathable with its full-size pocket springs giving you a great amount of support. It is a downgrade from the Otty Original as is expected from the cheaper price. The mattress does hold its own though with it still providing a great night’s sleep.

The big question, that will differ for everyone, is if the downgrade is worth the price difference. We feel that as the price difference for the mattress is only £70-80 then the Original is worth the extra. Considering the amount of time spent sleeping on a mattress over the years then the smaller price difference is insignificant.

If you have a smaller budget and this fits for you then we would not put you off, this is a well made, top quality mattress that will last for many comfortable years.
