As of May 2020 Casper have announced that they are stopping production within the UK. If you are still planning on buying a mattress with them please note that they have reduced all trial periods to just 30-days and are only providing a limited range until the end of the month.

The Hybrid from Casper is a different direction from their usual foam mattresses. The Casper Hybrid presents as a mixture between their signature foam that they are well known for with a zoned coil spring system that gives this mattress an extra layer of comfort.

The Casper Hybrid mattress is softer than previous offerings being rated at a medium. We feel it is slightly softer than the average medium mattress, however. With this, the mattress has an extra bounce while still maintaining good levels of support.

Casper is one of the more popular manufacturers within the mattress in a box business and has a reputation for delivering high-quality products since they began in 2014. Tested first in America, it has proven a success warranting production of the mattress within the UK. While different than their normal mattresses we feel it offers a great alternative to the all-foam offerings that are common with mattress in a box manufacturers and its combination of support, pressure relief, comfort and minimal movement transfer make it a very attractive choice.

Construction and Materials

The Casper Hybrid is built with quality in mind and it contains 5 layers aimed at providing you with the best possible nights sleep. The mattress is also TCPP free, this is a fire retardant commonly used in many products containing foam. This has been discovered as potentially toxic and the UK government guidelines recommend avoiding this product. This product is still compliant with UK fire safety regulations despite this.

The five layers of the Casper Hybrid are 3 foam layers, a layer of foam encasement and a layer of coil springs.

1. Open-Cell Foam Layer

The top layer of this mattress is a breathable, open-cell latex layer. This provides excellent bounce and allows you to move on the mattress easily, great if you sleep in multiple different ways. The open cell latex has natural cooling properties and is designed to keep you at a comfortable temperature throughout the night. The top of the mattress also boasts a firm perimeter allowing you to climb in and out of the bed much easier. This also stops you from feeling like you are going to fall out of the bed.

2. Pressure Relieving Memory Foam Layer

The second section down contains a responsive memory foam layer. This has a much firmer feel than the top latex layer. This is due to it being much slower at moulding to your body, similar to traditional memory foam mattresses. This layer of the mattress does provide a massive amount of support and is great at providing pressure relief to the shoulders and hips. While with a traditional memory foam mattress this layer will retain more body heat but its placement below the breathable latex seems to counteract this problem.

3. Zoned Transitional Support Layer

Third, you will find a transitional foam layer. This 4.5cm layer of high-density polyfoam allows for even weight distribution across your body. Weight is distributed evenly using a zoned foam system.. This layer will also allow you to experience the effect of the springs more.

4. Pocket Coil Spring Layer

The next layer of the mattress is the spring layer. They are organised in a zoned support system with firmer springs under the hips and softer springs under the shoulders. This allows for a more even distribution of your weight, ultimately making the bed more comfortable. The coils are resilient yet gentle to add an extra layer of comfort and pressure relief in the mattress.

5. Supportive Foam Base Layer

These springs are also encased in a durable support foam layer, which is the final layer and supports the softer foam and latex above. The springs add an extra layer of bounce as well, with its symmetrical construction made up of 5 different zones you will have the same experience at both sides of the mattress.

The cover is 99% polyester with 1% elastane to give the mattress a soft finish while keeping the cover stretchable. This combination also makes it machine washable at 40 degrees. Allowing for easy cleaning. It also has handles on the side to make rotating or moving the mattress an easy job.

Comfort, Support and Sleep Quality

The Casper Hybrid generally seems to have a soft, almost calming feel to it. The initial feel is that the mattress is very soft due to the springs being softer than traditional pocket-spring mattresses. The deeper memory foam layers provide you with a great amount of support and prevent a sinking feeling on the mattress. This creates a balanced feel of the mattress and allows the mattress to be comfortable for a wide range of sleepers no matter what their sleeping style is.

While the mattress will generally suit all types of sleepers, if you sleep on your stomach then you may lack some of the support you require, this is due to the softer nature of the mattress compared to all-foam mattresses. You should keep in mind that a person’s experience of comfort while in certain sleeping positions will differ depending on the person’s size and weight. The balance between comfort and support gives this mattress a rating of medium and while it is slightly softer than the average mattress the support that the memory foam layers provide provides more support than expected.

This and the zoned spring system ensures the mattress provides you with a lot of pressure relief on your joints and allows your spine to stay in a neutral position.

Casper claims that this mattress has minimal movement transfer across the bed. This stops you from being disturbed by your partner’s movement throughout the night. While we have found this to be generally true, the addition of the pocket spring layer on the mattress does slightly increase the movement transfer in comparison to all-foam mattresses. The top layers of foam do generally do a very good job in minimising this, however, along with its sturdy edge support. This makes the mattress an excellent choice for couples.

Trial and Guarantee

As with the vast majority of mattress in a box companies, the Casper Hybrid comes with a 100-sleep trial, during which you can get a free collection and full refund on the mattress if you do not like the feel of it. Getting the mattress into a relatively easy process and do not worry about the springs being damaged from being rolled up. Casper claims that 5 years of research went into the design of the mattress to make sure the springs can withstand being compressed and rolled into a smaller shape.

The mattress comes with a 10-year limited guarantee as standard and the ordering and delivery process is simple and easily organised.

Our Verdict

This mattress can be a great option for couples who sleep in different ways. It will also suit you if you tend to change sleeping positions during the night, this is due to the reduced motion transfer and soft top foam layers which are very adaptable to movement. The increased edge support tops this off, providing peace of mind that you won’t sink at the edge of the bed and feel as though you are going to fall out.

It would be unfair of us not to mention the concerns we have regarding this mattress. While it does provide a great deal of support regardless of sleeping position, if you are mainly a stomach sleeper then you may find the mattress does not provide enough support to sleep with full comfort due to its softness. Also if you are on the heavier side you may be uncomfortable with the amount you sink into the mattress as the top couple of layers are the softest and you will quickly sink through them.

The mattress is a strong competitor in the market for good reason and provides a level of support and comfort that is similar to offerings multiple times its price. The added layer of springs often not found in rolled-up mattresses allow it to have a luxury feel while still retaining the ease of movement and setup that a more traditional, all foam, mattress has. Casper has provided an excellent option for someone looking for a softer mixture of foam and springs.
